About Me

“Nothing gives me greater creative joy then getting to tell the stories of the average person. When done well, it not only honors the person, but highlights how one person can make a huge difference in their work place, their community, and the world.”

Molly McKellar is a Southern California–based producer raised in Colorado. Since earning her M.F.A. in Producing from Chapman University, she has produced multiple vertical features for CandyJar and documentaries for Roadtrip Nation, along with branded content for Taco Bell, Salt & Straw, Wildfang, and Crocs. Molly’s background includes agency experience at Paradigm in its television literary department, along with extensive script clearance work supporting productions ranging from independent companies to major studios such as Netflix, Paramount, NBCUniversal, and Warner Bros.

From these production experiences, McKellar developed a knack for offering creative solutions to handle the real-world constraints that arise at any stage of production. She is committed to elevating the stories of everyday people in ways that resonate and inspire.

Work

When I look at the selection of projects below, I’m reminded of how each project is unique in the constraints put on the project and the creative problem solving that is needed for each challenge. By working with collaborators in open dialogue, we are able to produce the best possible projects while still being true to our creative vision. Sometimes constraints are as simple as shortened timelines or trying to do more with less. Usually each project has particular nuances that are impactful on that day, set, story, or team that need in the moment decisions to provide direction. Each project has taught me something about how to plan better for the next. Each new project brings challenges and puzzles and I get to find the solution.

Consulting

As a producer, McKellar learned that when productions are not-planned well, they get messy. When production is too messy it can create issues that lead to going over budget, negative outcomes of the creative, and overall unhealthy set life. That is why she is constantly looking to improve the production process at each step of production to fit the unique needs of that organization.

For Production

  1. Create new pre-production processes to help increase communication between all members of a project.

  2. Develop production day workflows so that when hiccups arise, they can be addressed easily and swiftly.

  3. Re-organize entire video asset libraries and post-production process for more efficient edits.

  4. Navigating the clearance process.

For Story Development

McKellar is a member of the story consulting group Sundays @ Noon, a consortium of filmmakers from all walks of life to provide notes and actionable steps on scripts and unfinished films.
